APPLICATIONS TO OTHER SITUATIONS

If our premises about the market are valid, they should apply to other parts of our lives as well. And they do! For example, say you are coming to me for my help as a therapist. My very first task is to make sure that you feel in a no-risk situation. You must understand that there is a legally binding confidentiality about anything you might tell me. No matter what you do or say here, only you and I will know it. When you thoroughly understand that you are not taking any sort of risk being here, you begin to loosen up a bit. This relaxation may allow you to see parts of your life, and how you run them, in ways that have not been obvious before.

We must go further. We must set up some sort of structure in which each of us knows our role. I make the rules, but you are the leader. Wherever and in whatever direction you wish to move, I will support you there. My obligation is to share with you my thoughts and feedback about what is happening, without in any way threatening your safety and well-being. This structure must be crystal-clear and nonthreatening.

Once you realize that you are really safe and also understand the structure of the situation, an abiding confidence starts to build inside of you. You feel the power start to emerge from deep within. This building of confidence is automatic. Or, as described by one of my student traders, "It is really au-tomagic, how it works!" It is important to note here that the confidence building is quite natural. It is not something you strive for or struggle to get. It is automagic.

After a while, another quite natural change starts to occur. You begin to have fun. Most new patients are not attracted toward therapy for the "fun" of it. Their tunnel tells them there must be tears and sobbing and boxes of tissues. Sometimes, this happens, but for very short spans. Our favorite tunnel includes a lot of laughter and fun times.

Everything I have said about the therapy process is applicable to trading and learning to trade. Most traders sweat, struggle, and shed tears over trying to become a trader when a better course is simply to enjoy being a trader.

It is all so simple—not necessarily easy, but simple. I guarantee it,

I once saw a bumper sticker that gave this advice: "If sex is

a pain in the a ______ , you are doing it all wrong." Permit me to

bastardize the advice by saying: "If trading is not fun, you are doing it all wrong!"
